The Drop (2360 S Fawcett Ave, a few blocks off Pacific downtown) is Tacoma’s first dedicated indoor pickleball club: seven courts inside, one outside, permanent nets, and no basketball lines painted under your feet. I’m not affiliated with them. I coach on public courts around the city, plenty of my students play at The Drop, and this is the rundown I give anyone who asks whether it’s worth joining.
What a dedicated club gets you
Court time you can count on. Public-court pickleball in Tacoma is free, but it’s first-come, weather-dependent, and seasonal. The Drop’s calendar runs open play, leagues, clinics, and tournaments year-round, rain ignored. As of this writing they’re open roughly 8am to 8pm on weekdays and 9am to 5pm on weekends, but check their site; hours are exactly the kind of thing that changes.
The pro shop will also let you demo paddles before buying one, which is worth more than any review site if you’re shopping for your first paddle.
If you’re brand new
Look for the beginner-labeled sessions instead of walking into general open play cold. Open play sorts itself by skill quickly, and a first-timer dropped into a 3.5 rotation has a bad hour. The beginner blocks exist so that doesn’t happen to you.
Membership math
Club prices change like gym prices, so I won’t print a number that will be wrong by the time you read it. The arithmetic stays the same though: take the monthly rate and divide it by how many sessions you’d realistically play. At three or more sessions a week, almost any club membership beats piecing together drop-ins, and it demolishes doing nothing all winter. At once a week, Tacoma’s free courts win from May to September, and the cheap community-center drop-ins carry the cold months.
Where I fit in
The Drop runs group clinics on their courts. I teach semi-private lessons on public courts, $80 an hour total for two people, no membership involved. They’re different products: clinics give you structured reps in a group, a lesson gives you an hour of someone watching your game specifically. Some of my students do both and improve fast. If your next hour should be the watched kind, book a lesson.
We coach private lessons and clinics across Tacoma, Fircrest, and Lakewood. Book a lesson or see pricing.
