The Puyallup Recreation Center (808 Valley Ave NW) runs adult indoor drop-in pickleball on three courts, Monday through Thursday from 9:00 to 11:30 in the morning, for $5. That is one of the best pickleball deals in the South Sound. If you live in Puyallup or South Hill and you are starting out, start there.
The Recreation Center, indoors
Five dollars buys two and a half hours of rotation with whoever shows up, and a weekday-morning crowd is usually a friendly one for new players. The city also sells punch passes and monthly memberships, which becomes worth asking about sooner than most people expect. The one limitation is the schedule itself: mornings only, so players with day jobs mostly see these courts on a day off. Check the city’s recreation page for the current calendar before your first visit.
Outdoors, where the city provides the nets
Puyallup treats outdoor pickleball unusually well:
- The Recreation Center has five outdoor courts, and the city puts nets up from May through October. You carry a paddle and nothing else.
- Clark’s Creek Park North has four lighted courts. The lights run on a push button, and the park stays open until 11pm from March through September. Evening games after work are possible here in a way they are not at most parks in the region.
For comparison, Tacoma’s outdoor nets come down starting September 1, and the verified court list covers all six sites. Puyallup keeps its nets up into October, so the season runs longer here, and there are lights.
Lessons for Puyallup players
My advice is plain: for a first lesson, the twenty-minute drive to Tacoma is usually a better deal than paying our travel fee to come to you. A first lesson is mostly fundamentals, and fundamentals do not care which court they happen on.
Where the travel fee earns its keep is a standing arrangement: two neighbors or a foursome who want a regular session at Clark’s Creek, for example. We bring the net and the balls, the fee is flat, and you see it before you confirm anything.
