Gig Harbor quietly became one of the best places to play pickleball in the South Sound. Doris Heritage Park opened in June 2025 with six dedicated pickleball courts: free, drop-in, with automatic lights running 6am to 10pm. If your mental map of Gig Harbor pickleball still says “taped lines at Sehmel,” it’s out of date, and so are most of the court-finder apps.
Doris Heritage Park
Six purpose-built courts is more dedicated outdoor pickleball than Tacoma proper has at any single site. No reservations, no fee, and the lights mean the season doesn’t end when the early sunsets arrive. For casual play, this is now the answer to “where do I play in Gig Harbor,” full stop.
Indoor: the new PenMet Recreation Center
PenMet’s recreation center has indoor courts that divide into as many as nine pickleball courts, with drop-in sessions roughly ten hours a week and punch passes available. Between this and the Tom Taylor Family YMCA’s gym sessions, Gig Harbor players no longer need to cross the bridge for Tacoma’s indoor options when it rains, though The Drop’s evening calendar still pulls some over.
Sehmel Homestead Park and the club
Sehmel (10123 78th Ave NW) is smaller than its reputation: per PenMet’s own site, the pickleball lines live on two tennis courts and a basketball court, rentable at $10 an hour, and you should plan on bringing your own net for casual play. What keeps Sehmel relevant is the South Sound Pickleball Club, which runs scheduled play there: $65 a year for an individual, $150 for a family, and a $10 drop-in for nonmembers. If you arrive and the courts are full of organized rotation, that’s the club, and paying the $10 to join a session is the fastest way into Gig Harbor’s pickleball community.
Lessons for Gig Harbor players
We’re Tacoma-based, and Gig Harbor students work with us two ways. We come to you at Doris Heritage, Sehmel, or another court, net included, with a flat travel fee for crossing the bridge. Or you come to us at a Tacoma or Fircrest court at standard rates, which is fifteen minutes over the Narrows for most of the harbor. Either way a semi-private lesson is $80 an hour total for two players, and lessons for two is the natural format here; most Gig Harbor inquiries we get are couples or neighbors starting together.
